AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The end of the World Golf Championships was a matter of time, especially with the arrival next year of smaller fields and enormous prize money for the elite players. What stings is losing the Match Play. The tournament began in 1999 at La Costa in California. If that seems like a long time ago, consider that Tiger Woods had only one major when he beat six-time major champion Nick Faldo in the opening round. “I’m not going to feel sorry for him. He’s had his chances to win tournaments,” Woods said. He was 23 and already ruthless. The final version takes place this week at Austin Country Club. It has moved to five other courses and the format has switched from single elimination to group play. What hasn’t changed are memories that have left a mark on the most fickle event in golf.___Gene Sarazen was 97 and watching from his home in Florida when Jeff Maggert won the inaugural event in 38 holes. Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:49:33 GMT

HONG KONG (AP) — Public screenings of a slasher film that features Winnie the Pooh were scrapped abruptly in Hong Kong on Tuesday, sparking discussions over increasing censorship in the city. Film distributor VII Pillars Entertainment announced on Facebook that the release of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” on Thursday had been canceled with “great regret” in Hong Kong and neighboring Macao. It did not elaborate nor immediately respond to a request for comment. For many residents, the Winnie the Pooh character is a playful taunt of China’s President Xi Jinping, and Chinese censors in the past had briefly banned social media searches for the bear in the country. In 2018, film “Christopher Robin” also featuring Winnie the Pooh was reportedly denied a release in China. The film’s pull in Hong Kong has prompted concern on social media over the territory’s shrinking freedoms. The movie was initially set to be shown in about 30 cinemas in Hong Kong, VII Pillars Entertainmen...
