WESTWOOD — If the sequel is anywhere near as good as the original, Wednesday’s D1 state title game between Xaverian and St. John’s Prep will be another blockbuster. On Thursday morning, Xaverian kicker Luke Bell booted a field goal as time ran out to give his team a 23-21 victory over Thanksgiving rival St. John’s Prep. With the victory, Xaverian improves to 10-2 overall and earns a share of the Catholic Conference title. The Prep suffers its first loss of the season and stands at 11-1.“It’s fantastic,” Xaverian coach Al Fornaro said of having to play the Prep twice. “I was talking to (St. John’s Prep assistant) coach (Mike) Barbati, who has been at St. John’s for a number of years. We were reminiscing about having to play at Boston College one year, where Zack Asack was our quarterback, and Nick Borseti was their linebacker. We played here (one year), we had the snow plows come out. We played one year where we lost Kenny Kern and ...Lynn Classical holds off Lynn English

LYNN — The 110th meeting between Lynn Classical and Lynn English won’t be remembered for its beauty. But for the Rams and coach Brian Vaughan, it’s a game that they won’t forget. In a physical battle, the Rams used a clock-killing run game and a staunch defense to beat the archrival Bulldogs, 8-6, in front of a large crowd at Manning Field.“We knew that it was going to be a grind it out type of game,” Vaughan said. “I know what happens in this game as a player (at Lynn English) and now as a coach.”The Rams gained only 213 yards of total offense on Thursday but they did it well enough at times to keep English’s offense off the field for long periods. But it was the defense that came up with what ultimately was the winning score as they recorded a safety late in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. The Classical offense also converted off the ensuing free kick thanks to a 55-yard drive in six plays. Brian Vaughan Jr.’s keeper from a yard out capped the march and made it 8-0 at the half....Thanksgiving Day high school football scoreboard

In the 136th meeting between the two sides, Boston Latin defeated Boston English, 19-6, at Harvard Stadium. With the win, Latin improves to 83-40-13 and halts a two-year losing skid in the nation’s longest continuous football rivalry.Quarterback August Groh rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Running back Eric Power added 42 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown and fumble recovery touchdown.“It was a great team effort. I had to run out of the pocket a few times and my guys knew scramble drill. We just gave it our all. These last two years have been rough on us,” said Groh.Latin started the contest with a rush from Power who lost a fumble, allowing English to take over at the Latin 22. The Latin defense held firm and forced an English turnover on downs. On the ensuing drive, Power fumbled again on their opening play, giving English another chance at a score from the Latin 19. Once again, the Latin defense refused to budge and Power made up for earlier mistakes, recoverin...Egg giants conspired on price fixing, jury finds

INDIANAPOLIS — An Illinois jury ruled this week that several major egg producers conspired to limit the U.S.’s supply of eggs in order to raise prices in a case stemming from a federal lawsuit originally filed 12 years ago.Several large food manufacturing companies including Kraft Foods Global, Inc. and The Kellogg Company alleged in the lawsuit originally filed in 2011 that producers used various means to limit the U.S. domestic supply of eggs to increase the prices of eggs and egg products during the 2000s. The time frame of the conspiracy was an issue throughout the case; jurors ultimately determined damages occurred between 2004-2008.A jury unanimously delivered its verdict Tuesday in the Northern District of Illinois and damages will be decided in a trial scheduled for next week. The suppliers include the family company of an Indiana egg farmer running for the U.S. Senate in the state.Attorneys for the four egg suppliers named in the lawsuit did not immediately return phon...Healey admin awards $27 million toward greening of affordable housing projects

The Healey Administration has awarded $27 million toward making some of the state’s affordable housing developments more energy efficient.Ten grants made to seven organizations under the Affordable Housing Deep Energy Retrofit Grant Program were announced by Governor Maura Healey this week at The Village at Brookline, a more than 300 unit affordable housing development in the heart of the pricey Boston suburb. The money will go toward “deep energy retrofits and energy efficiency upgrades, building system electrification, and onsite renewable energy generation” at developments in Allston, Boston, Easthampton, Greenfield, Northampton, Salem, and Worcester, according to the governor’s office.“Every day, I hear from residents who are struggling with the high costs of energy and housing. This grant program will lower monthly energy bills and maintain affordable housing for families across Massachusetts,” Healey said. “Electrifying our buildings presents an important opportunity to d...Will Zach LaVine be traded before the deadline? What should the Chicago Bulls get in return? 6 trade rumor mill questions.

It’s been a week since the first report of Zach LaVine’s openness to a trade out of Chicago cracked open the future of the season for the Bulls. This a new season of change for the Bulls, who could be entering the early stages of yet another rebuild just three years after starting a new project centered around LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vučević.Let’s take a look at the top questions surrounding the latest cycle of trade rumors:1. Will a trade happen soon?It depends on what is meant by “soon” — but the short answer is no.The Bulls need to wait until mid-December to see a full spread of offers from teams throughout the league. This waiting period is mandated by free-agency rules which prohibit players from being traded until Dec. 15 or three months after the date of their contract signing, whichever comes later. Due to this latter clause, some players will not be available until January. It looks most realistic to expect the Bulls to e...Take this as a sign, head to the slopes at Big Bear Mountain (share with your shred pal)

OTTAWA — The Federation of Canadian Municipalities says new research it commissioned finds municipalities would need $600 billion in infrastructure funding to help build 5.8 million homes by 2030.That’s the number of homes the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp. says Canada needs to build to restore affordability.Canadian municipalities are voicing their disappointment that the federal Liberals didn’t include a new infrastructure funding model in its fall economic statement this week, despite the prime minister promising one would come in the fall. The federation held a news conference in Ottawa today to call on the federal government to convene provincial, territorial and municipal leaders to discuss a new funding framework that takes economic and population growth into better account. The fiscal update that Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland presented earlier this week included few new housing policies, as the Liberal government acknowledges the pressure that high infl...Pierre Poilievre says he has a plan to tackle hate — but without touching free speech

OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he has a plan for how he would tackle a rise in hate-motivated crimes reported since the start of Israel-Hamas war, but it doesn’t involve touching what protesters say. Poilievre presented what he called “common sense Conservative measures” during a press conference at a Toronto synagogue today, including re-evaluating Canada’s terrorism threat level and creating an anti-hate network for faith communities. Jewish Canadians have reported a sharp rise in antisemitism and violence against synagogues and schools since Hamas militants’ surprise attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7. Muslim communities have reported a similar uptick in violence, as Israel continues to wage war in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the attacks. Politicians and Jewish advocacy groups have raised concerns about chants and signage at protests that they fear could incite violence, and they have also raised the alarm about a rise in ...Latest news
