Senate moves to repeal president’s Iraq war power authority WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate moved toward a vote Wednesday to repeal the 2002 measure that greenlighted the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, which would end more than 20 years of authorization for U.S. presidents to use force in that country and return those war powers to Congress. The Iraq War ended years ago, and repeal would not be expected to affect any current military deployments. About 2,500 U.S. troops remain in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government and assist and advise local forces. The bipartisan legislation would also repeal the 1991 authorization that sanctioned the U.S.-led Gulf War.Lawmakers in both parties are increasingly seeking to claw back congressional powers over U.S. military strikes and deployments, and some lawmakers who voted for the Iraq War two decades ago now say that was a mistake.Iraqi deaths are estimated in the hundreds of thousands, and nearly 5,000 U.S. troops were killed in the war after President George W. Bush’s administration falsely claimed...

Senate to vote on repeal of Iraq war power authorizations, 20 years after US invasion (CNN) — The Senate is set to vote Wednesday on a bill that would repeal authorizations for the use of military force against Iraq, a significant moment as lawmakers aim to reassert authority in military intervention abroad. The vote, which is expected to succeed by a bipartisan majority, comes on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. The White House said it supports the measure to repeal the 1991 and 2002 authorizations for use of force in Iraq. If it passes both chambers, it would mark a formal conclusion to the conflicts and a symbolic reassertion of Congress’ ability to declare war.The fate of the bill in the US House of Representatives is still uncertain, but Speaker Kevin McCarthy has signaled support for it and said it would likely be brought to the floor. With bipartisan support for the repeal, the measure appears to have a good chance of passing the chambers, though it’s still unclear if lawmakers will try to amend it.Senate Major...
