BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo returned to the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against Toronto, a day after he was benched by manager Alex Cora.“Hopefully we learned as a group from what happened yesterday and that’s the reason that we did it,” Cora said before the Red Sox lost the series finale to the Blue Jays, 13-1. “It was my decision not to play him and I have my reasons and we’ll leave it at that.”On Sunday, Verdugo went 3 for 4 with three singles and made a nice running catch on Matt Chapman’s fly ball near the Pesky Pole in the fourth inning. The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with four-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Justin Houston on a one-year contract on Sunday.Houston, a 12-year NFL veteran, gives the Panthers the veteran edge rusher they sought to play opposite Brian Burns. Houston has 111 1/2 sacks during his career, including 9 1/2 last season for the Baltimore Ravens.Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer had previously said the Panthers were seeking to add an edge rusher for Carolina’s new 3-4 defensive scheme to help take some of the pressure off Burns, a Pro Bowl player last season.Houston’s best season came in 2014 when he was selected as an All-Pro, finishing with 22 sacks while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs.The 34-year-old Houston was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2011 and spent eight seasons in Kansas City. Two Orlando Police officers are expected to make a full recovery after they were shot in the line of duty.Late Friday night, the officers, whose names have not been released, were trying to stop a car connected to a homicide in Northwest Miami-Dade.That’s when, investigators said, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Daton Viel, opened fire, critically injuring the officers.Investigators later found Viel at the Holiday Inn near Universal Orlando Resort.Police said the suspect was killed in a shootout.Viel has an extensive criminal record and was arrested at least four times since 2016. A diving team that took to the water in Doral has uncovered not just one underwater mystery, but nearly three dozen.Underwater video captured a diver finding a vehicle in the murky waters of a lake located near Miami International Airport.Divers Ken Fleming and Doug Bishop spoke with 7News about their finds on Sunday.“We’re here trying to solve missing persons cold cases,” said Fleming.The mission led these divers to Doral in an effort to detect ditched vehicles.“That’s when we realized that we had 32 cars underwater,” said Fleming.Fleming said the vehicles were dumped in this body of water during various criminal activities.“When we discover a spot like this with multiple vehicles, it pretty much indicates that a crime where they’re disposing the vehicles and hiding them from law enforcement,” he said.The divers work solely as volunteers. Boston police used a taser to subdue a man who had been reportedly barricaded in a home in Dorchester on Sunday with a knife. Officers responding to a report of an armed man barricaded in a home on Seaver Street shut down the area to traffic and worked to communicate with the man.“It was like a movie,” said Jason McMiller, who was visiting friends in the area and found himself in the middle of the situation.“The first thing I saw was the SWAT team gathered in the area, clearly everyone was out of the house, it went on for a couple hours, after that they got the guy out of the house, tasers was applied, and everything was secure.” McMiller said the man was seen wandering the area in the days before the standoff.“If it is a mental situation, that he gets the help that he needs,” McMillan said about the situation.Cellphone video showed heavily armed officers tasing the man before running up the steps to the porch and placing him into custody. An hours-long standoff between police and a barricaded suspect around Caldwell Street in Charlestown Saturday night ended after over eight hours.Boston police then responded to the area where police said a man barricaded himself inside his home shortly around 4:30 p.m. The standoff lasted until about 1 a.m. Police said no one was injured, and the barricaded person was sent to the hospital for evaluation.Neighbors speaking with 7NEWS said they called police because they were concerned for another neighbor. “He was, if anything, he was inside his own apartment where he’s allowed to have it,” a neighbor said. “I think he was just dry firing it, like it wasn’t loaded just clicking. From what I hear, the neighbors probably heard that through the walls.”With police responding, some neighbors said they came home to realize they could not park on their street. An East Templeton man raised thousands of dollars for a noble cause by hiking the length of the Appalachian Trail at the age of 71.David Manca says he completed the daunting, 2,200-mile-long trail in a little more than four months. His journey started down in Georgia and wrapped up in Maine. “I’ve done a couple short hikes but not a hiker per se,” Manca said of his hiking experience prior to the monumental undertaking.He said he walked 10 to 12 hours each day and faced extreme weather and physical obstacles.“There were a few quite dangerous and when you get to river you hike alone no one there to watch you cross if something happens, you’re on your own,” he said.The driving force keeping him going was the donations he was raising for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which raises money to support programs that honor first responders and military personnel who make extraordinary sacrifices every day. Hundreds of people made their way to the Feast of St. Agrippina in Boston’s North End on Sunday for fun, festivities, food, and faith in keeping a more-than-a-century-old tradition alive in the city.Many of those gathered said the traditional feast and parade of the statue on Hanover Street means the world to them and keeping the celebration alive is all about passing the tradition on to the next generations of Boston residents.Many North End restaurant owners and area vendors were out dishing out their food and there was face painting and other fun activities for kids.The feast was the first of four to be held in the North End.Latest news
